Allow me share a simple yet powerful starting point: RESEARCH. Yes, diving into a bit of detective work can be your game changer!

Why Research is Your Secret Weapon in Email Marketing

Understanding your competitors' email marketing strategies is like having a roadmap to avoid their mistakes AND replicate their successes. It’s not about copying – it’s about learning what works and what doesn’t in your specific niche. This insight is invaluable in crafting a strategy that resonates with your audience and stands out in their inboxes.

I repeat, STANDS OUT in their inboxes! The goal is to have people excited to see your name pop up in their inbox!

How does one go about doing "research"?

So happy you asked, keep scrolling and lets dive in below.....

First, what's your business or brand? What's your title?

Examples:

  • boutique owner

  • aesthetician

  • hair stylist

  • fitness guru

  • social media manager

That should be easy to nail down 🤪

Now let's dive into some research!

Pick a platform where you can find some successful business owners in your specific industry (I personally prefer Instagram as it's the easiest to navigate on for this activity). *other options: YouTube, Pinterest, Facebook & TikTok

Type your industry into the search bar, You might have to do this multiple times with different phrases to see what comes up. Example: fitness guru could be fitness coach or fitness mentor or fitness instructor.

Things to look for:

  • the content they are putting out

  • engagement

  • and for the purpose of this research.... do they have an email capture system set up?! (could be with a freebie, a lead magnet, a discount a webinar.... ANYTHING that is asking you to enter your email!) Enter your info... this is STEP #1

And the research begins!

Learning from the Best: The Lead Magnet

Your lead magnet is your first handshake with potential customers. After you enter your information, take a peek at what came in your inbox. What caught your eye about what they were offering and how does it compare to what showed up in your inbox?

What parts of it do you like, dislike or would you change?

What did the subject line of the email say? Did it make you want to click?

What was the tone of the email? How was it laid out? Did they include any other information?

You are literally looking at ALL the things here!

After you comb through one, go and do it again! I actually challenge you to do this with MULTIPLE competitors.

Top-Notch Brands Use Competitive Research

Did you know that even the most famous brands didn’t get to the top by chance. They constantly keep an eye on the competition. They adapt and evolve their strategies based on market trends and consumer behavior insights. This ongoing process of learning and adapting is crucial for staying relevant and successful.

I want you to save the emails and lead magnets that you received that you LOVED. You can use them as a model and for inspiration. We are NOT copying. We are taking the ideas and strategies we like that others are using and making them our OWN.

What came in the second email? What was the subject line?

What information did they include?

When did they start to "pitch" offers... aka ask you to spend money?

How long (or short) were the emails?

Were you engaged in the emails? Or did you want to click unsubscribe?
